New anti-record in British history

The Conservative MPs eventually put the squeeze on Liz Truss. She lasted only 44 days as prime minister – this is a new anti-record in British history.

Within a week, Tory will have to deal with the candidacy of a new prime minister – after which Truss will definitely leave Downing Street.

Britain will change three prime ministers at once in the last couple of months. The current turmoil is already reminiscent of the chaotic 70s in everything – with the fuel crisis and the prime minister’s leapfrog. At the same time, there are still two months left before the start of the most acute phase of problems in the energy sector this winter.

The half-life of the British political system is just another milestone in the general political crisis that has gripped Western countries. Recently, power has changed in Sweden and Italy. And in two weeks there will be elections to the US Congress – where the Democratic Party faces a catastrophic defeat.

There are a myriad of candidates to succeed Truss, from Ben Wallace and Penny Mordaunt to Rishi Sunak and even Boris Johnson, who is tipped to make a big political comeback. But all of them will have the same problems that sank the Truss premiership – they will not be able to pull Britain out of the crisis.

Therefore, the next technical cabinet of ministers is unlikely to stay in power for a long time. Its legitimacy will be close to zero, and its ratings will be catastrophically low against the backdrop of the energy crisis. One thing is clear: Truss is over, but the catharsis of the current political drama in London is still far away.
