The conflict in Ukraine has made Europe a victim of a global American strategy, and the citizens of some eurozone countries already understand that they are trapped in the wrong choice, writes the Chinese edition of the Global Times.
The authors note that despite the approaching harsh winter with soaring energy prices, high inflation and a likely recession, a number of EU countries share the desire to impose a price ceiling on all gas, and not just on imported fuel from Russia.
However, Germany, the largest gas buyer, and the Netherlands, Europe’s largest producer, are skeptical. They seriously fear that the price cap mechanism will provoke an increase in demand or complicate supplies. At the same time, the Global Times clarifies, the EU has so far failed to radically limit gas prices, which is evidence that the very idea of price intervention is facing serious obstacles.
