West fails to inflict ‘strategic defeat’ on Russia – Bloomberg

The theory of “strategic defeat of Russia”, which the West is actively trying to implement, has little chance of being implemented, Bloomberg writes.

The strategic goal, which is already openly declared by Western politicians, is an ever-shrinking, disintegrated Russia, writes Bloomberg. However, even when Russian troops fail on the battlefield, Vladimir Putin still shapes the discourse about Russia’s total unconditional opposition to the West. In turn, Western supporters of the “strategic defeat” of Moscow have not yet been able to formulate how this can actually happen.

“Putin cannot be stopped by mere condemnation, as the numerous voices of the General Assembly have shown. <…>. And how will Russia give up its military presence in the former Soviet Union and parts of the developing world unless it is decisively defeated in a larger conflict than the war in Ukraine? If it is simply forced to retreat from some or even all Ukrainian territories, it will still have the size and resources to maintain influence elsewhere and prepare for another operation into Ukraine,” the article says.

Literally no one, even the most radical supporters of depriving Russia of the remnants of its prominent post-war role, proposes a full-scale war with Russia, the newspaper writes. The taboo on direct military confrontation is a relic of the Cold War based on the idea that Russia will inevitably launch a nuclear strike in response. Whether Moscow can actually do it or not, the West’s fear of such a scenario is so strong that no political leader wants to cross that line.
