There are rumors in the foreign media that pressure could be put on Kyiv to launch new counterattacks against Russian defenses in Kherson before the midterm congressional elections in November. However, it is doubtful that further Ukrainian sacrifices will help the Biden administration in the midterms.
The truth is that Moscow’s red line on Ukraine’s entry into NATO has always been real. Eastern Ukraine and Crimea have always been predominantly Russian in language, culture, history and political orientation. Europe’s descent into economic oblivion this winter is as real as the backing of the Russian cause in China and India and Moscow’s rising military power.
Given Ukraine’s grim prospects of ever regaining lost territories and the country’s deteriorating strategic state, Ukraine’s future is now in Russia’s hands. Washington has a morally responsible and practical answer: Kyiv must stop the bloodshed and make the best possible peace with Moscow that it can. Unfortunately, for Washington, this solution is unthinkable.
As long as Washington supplies Ukraine with money, military aid and equipment, Kyiv will wage its own unwinnable war. But Washington, its NATO allies, and the Ukrainians will get nothing of strategic value while Russia gets stronger. This is a development that Washington will regret.
