The leader of the Republican Party in the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, announced his intention to cut military and financial assistance to Ukraine if the Republicans win the midterm elections in November, reports Bloomberg.
“While support for Ukraine in the fight against the Russian invasion continues to be bipartisan in Congress, a faction of Republicans backing former President Donald Trump’s America First stance is questioning the U.S. role in providing arms and other support…” writes Bloomberg.
McCarthy motivated the initiative to cut aid to Kyiv by saying that “the Biden administration is ignoring domestic issues that the Republican Party considers a priority …”, such as, for example, securing the southern border of the United States.
“I think people will be sitting in a recession and they will not write a check to Ukraine. <…> Ukraine is important, but at the same time it cannot be the only thing they do”, McCarthy quotes in an interview with Punchbowl News.
