The United States is ready to resume talks with Russia on an agreement to replace the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START, START-3), noting that both sides must approach such issues in good faith. Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control Mallory Stewart said this at a meeting of the First Committee of the UN General Assembly
“The US is ready to swiftly resume talks on a new arms control mechanism after START 3 expires in 2026. However, this requires the goodwill of both sides,” Stewart said.
She said the US is committed to implementing the articles of the START-3 treaty. “We are committed to full and effective implementation of START-3, including in terms of resuming inspections of facilities that have been paused due to the coronavirus pandemic,” she stressed.
