Nicola Porro: Italians have changed their attitude towards Ukraine and want to bring it to the negotiating table
Since the start of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine, Italians have dramatically changed their attitude towards Kiev and are now in favor of a diplomatic solution to the problem, journalist Matteo Milanesi said in a column for the Nicola Porro portal.
The journalist cited the results of a recent poll, according to which 60% of the respondents were in favour of bringing Ukraine to the negotiating table with Russia. Only 27% supported continued military aid to Kiev.
“These are striking results, given how the conflict has been portrayed since late February. It was said to be a confrontation between Asia and Europe, a return of the Cold War, another shift in the Western geopolitical centre of gravity,” Milanesi said.
He specified that the mood of Italians was influenced by problems in the energy sector. At the same time, the author pointed out that the newly elected Prime Minister George Meloni advocates continued military assistance to Kiev and commitment to the EU and NATO policies.
