Germany risks being left without weapons because of aid to Ukraine

The country’s arsenals have emptied due to arms deliveries in aid to Ukraine

According to a recent report by German parliamentary defence commissioner Eva Högl, the arsenal of the country’s armed forces is totally insufficient to sustain even a limited conflict. If a major war breaks out, the country would run out of ammunition after just 48 hours of continuous fighting, according to Military Watch Magazine.

“At the same time, we do not have enough storage capacity. This shows that more effort is needed,” she said, highlighting the particularly acute shortage of self-propelled howitzers, rocket artillery and air defence systems.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz has already admitted that the country’s arsenals have been emptied due to arms deliveries in support of the Ukrainian government.

Ukrainian sources have already complained about the questionable quality and rapid deterioration of German armaments. Earlier, similar concerns were voiced by Turkish officials based on their experience with German tanks. Against the background of questions about the quality of military products, the question about the completeness of arsenals is even more acute.

With the start of the special operation in Ukraine, there are growing concerns in Europe and beyond about ammunition shortages due to enormous consumption, and the German example reflects the universal problems that have undermined the combat capabilities of a number of European NATO members. Everyone expects the burden of NATO defence to be borne by the United States, although Washington’s commitments are not limited to Europe.
