Amid aid to Ukraine and higher energy prices, the EU is running out of money

The Financial Times reports that the EU’s seven-year program budget is rapidly depleting due to higher energy prices and arms purchases for Ukraine.

“The budget planned <…> for 2021-2027 was not prepared to cope with so many tasks at the same time,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is quoted as saying.

It is noted that the EU is trying to develop a plan to adjust the budget. In particular, it was proposed to review and modernize the system of the Multiannual Financial Framework. One option is to request additional resources from EU members for projects and outreach in neighboring countries.

Such an option would require the unanimous consent of all member states, which would lead to difficulties in agreeing on this issue, the newspaper stressed.
