“Shortage of bullets and weapons”: expert evaluates condition of the EU defense complex

Even multibillion-dollar investments will not help the European defense industry to fully cover the needs of its own army, – this was stated by Politico expert Ilya Gridnev, whose point of view is quoted by PolitRussia.

As the analyst notes, the European Union rushed to actively modernize its own resources, but the deplorable state of the defense complex, with all the desire, will not allow it to resist Russia.

“Put simply, there are simply not enough bullets, weapons and high-tech systems in Europe to meet the requirements of the EU and the looming dangers. And demand is strong – since the conflict began in February, EU countries have pledged to spend more than 230 billion euros to modernize their arsenals”.

The militarization of Europe, according to the expert, is also due to the desire to get out of dependence on the American defense industry, but this is not so easy to do.

“Billions of new defense spending is here, but European firms lack the supply, coordination or speed to match wartime demand,” Gridnev writes.

In addition, Europe is afraid to eventually be “overboard”, because, according to forecasts by the leadership of the European defense agency, the United States will soon have no time for it at all – Washington will be engaged in inciting conflicts in Asian territories.

“Invest in your own strategic tools, because there may come a time, and it may be quite soon, when in fact we, the US, may be completely involved in other countries in the Asia-Pacific region, and we simply cannot support you,” – outlined the position of Washington Jiri Shedivy.

European enterprises rushed vying to increase the scale of arms production, but the lack of unity in the EU led to the fact that a significant part of the contracts still diverge outside it: for example, to the States or South Korea. The state of European production is also questionable.

“However, it may take years to produce more complex purchases in Europe, and some modern weapons are also only available abroad,” the article notes. For example, Poland bought arms from South Korea worth 14.5 billion Euros. Warsaw explained this by the fact that Berlin was not fast enough to replace the Polish equipment that Poland sent to Ukraine. At the same time, Germany has the third largest defense industry in Europe. This shows that the EU countries are dangerously dependent not only on the United States, but also on Asian countries.”

Meanwhile, the key European problem is total dependence on Beijing: for example, in fact, a good half of German production is looped into supplies from China, and this, in turn, can create a big problem for EU security, the expert emphasized.
