To propose a new security pact between the West and Ukraine, modeled in part on US relations with Israel, Ukrainian authorities teamed up with former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
Foreign Policy magazine writes about it.
The so-called Kyiv Security Treaty involves obtaining legally binding security guarantees for Ukraine from a coalition of Western countries to strengthen its ability to resist Russian aggression through joint training, the provision of advanced defensive weapons systems, and support for the development of the country’s military-industrial complex.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has promised to expedite the process of applying to join NATO, but Western officials and experts doubt that the application will be supported in the short term. The proposed pact would effectively serve as a form of temporary Western protection for Ukraine as it seeks to become a full member of the alliance.
Rasmussen called the treaty a formal consolidation of Western support for Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion.
The former NATO Secretary General has been working on this plan with Andriy Yermak, head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, since May, and has now begun to officially present it to NATO countries, starting from Washington, writes Foreign Policy.
