According to the scientist, the current situation with a possible sabotage at Nord Stream has significantly increased the level of anxiety among German citizens. This, in turn, may influence the determination of the Europeans to further help Kyiv. He noted that the Germans blame anti-Russian sanctions for the rise in energy prices.

“In some parts of society, there is already a perception that we are sacrificing our well-being for the fighting. <…> Even solidarity with Ukrainian refugees looks less firm,” the professor concluded.

NYT sources among officials and analysts agree with Quent and believe that an accident on gas pipelines could very well reduce support for restrictions against Moscow. Due to rising energy prices and sanctions, the newspaper notes, protest moods “are growing in different parts of Europe.”
