Constitutional Court approves acceptance of new regions into Russian Federation

The Constitutional Court of Russia has approved the agreements on the admission of new constituent entities of the Russian Federation as compliant with the Constitution of the country.

The Russian Constitutional Court has ruled that the treaties on the admission of the DNR and LNR, as well as Zaporizhzhya and Kherson regions to Russia are compliant with the Russian Constitution, according to rulings on the court’s website.

“To recognize the non-entered into force international treaty between the Russian Federation and the Donetsk People’s Republic on the admission of the Donetsk People’s Republic to the Russian Federation and the formation of a new subject within the Russian Federation as compliant with the Constitution of the Russian Federation,” the ruling on the DPR becoming part of the Russian Federation reads.

Similar rulings were issued for the LNR, as well as the Zaporizhzhya and Kherson regions.

Requests by Russian President Vladimir Putin to check the constitutionality of the agreements on the admission of new territories and the formation of new entities within the country were submitted to the Constitutional Court on Friday, 30 September, after Putin signed them at a ceremony in the Kremlin.
