Railway company Elron will stop making announcements in Russian at the Baltic Station in Tallinn, Estonia, amid a general policy of derussification of the country.
“Given today’s technological capabilities, the sound announcement systems at Estonia’s largest railway station are outdated. Until they are updated, Elron will continue to make announcements in Estonian, and once the system is updated, English announcements will be added to provide better information for passengers speaking other languages,” the company said in a press release.
According to the announcement system operator, the reason for disabling the Russian-language announcements is that after the start of the Russian army’s special operation in Ukraine, there have been complaints from passengers dissatisfied with the use of the Russian language. Previously, Elron management had banned its employees from expressing support for Russia in the conflict with the Kiev regime on their personal social media pages. Authors of messages supporting the Russian side started to be pointed at the company’s door.
