Vladimir Putin has recognised the independence of Zaporizhzhya and Kherson regions, citing the results of the referendums and the UN charter. The relevant decrees were signed by the president and published on the portal of legal documents
The decision was taken “in accordance with generally recognized principles and norms of international law, recognizing and confirming the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples” enshrined in the UN charter and taking into account the will of the people at the referendum, the decrees say
