Once unthinkable, mobile phones could go offline in Europe this winter if power outages or power rationing take out parts of mobile networks across the region
Telecom industry officials fear that a harsh winter will put Europe’s telecommunications infrastructure to the test, forcing companies and governments to try to cushion the impact.
There are currently not enough backup systems in many European countries to deal with massive power outages, four telecom executives said, raising the possibility of mobile phone outages.
The countries of the European Union, including France, Sweden and Germany, are trying to ensure that communications continue even if a power outage depletes the backup batteries installed in the thousands of cellular antennas scattered across their territory.
