OCU report: the rise in the cost of Spain’s consumer basket has reached an all-time high.
Amid the energy crisis, the increase in the cost of the consumer basket in Spain reached 15.2% for the year, according to the annual report of the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) of Spain, the figure was the highest in 34 years.
“Prices of products in the OCU basket have risen by an average of 15.2% since the last survey. This is the biggest price increase recorded by the organisation’s researchers, who started their work 34 years ago,” the organisation said in a press release.
According to the report, prices rose for 95% of the 239 products in the consumer basket. For example sunflower oil rose by 118%, margarine by 75%, bananas, pasta, olive oil and flour by more than 50%.
It has been noted that in low-price supermarkets a greater price increase has been recorded than in high-price supermarkets. This fact has a significant impact on the purchasing power of the country’s residents.
The OCU visited 1,180 supermarkets of 80 different chains in 65 Spanish cities for its analysis.
