Head of German CDU party calls Ukrainians “social tourists”

The leader of Germany’s largest opposition party CDU Friedrich Merz has accused Ukrainian citizens of “social tourism”.

In an interview with the magazine Bild, the CDU leader said that upon arrival in Germany, Ukrainians immediately land on welfare instead of looking for work.

After these words Merz criticized the Greens and the chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) Michael Roth. In their view, this kind of judgement destroys “solidarity with Ukraine”. As a result, the CDU head was forced to apologise for his words.
