Politico: the decision to send German tanks to Ukraine is “shelved”

The Bundestag again postponed the voting process on the transfer of German main battle tanks (MBT) Leopard and infantry fighting vehicles (IFV) Marder to Ukraine. This is reported by Politico.

After active disputes, the draft bill was submitted for consideration to the relevant committees, actually putting them on the back burner, writes Politico. The hearing on this issue was initiated by the centre-right opposition bloc CDU/CSU. He demanded “immediately allow the export of German tanks and infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine,” the magazine writes.

It is clarified that the “green” and free social democrats, Scholz’s coalition partners, have been demanding the same for a long time. However, Politico notes that after a “heated 50-minute debate,” the majority of MPs from Scholz’s party (SPD), and, surprisingly, from the Greens and Free Democrats, passed the proposal to the committees.

“This effectively delays the plenary vote on the text by several weeks,” writes Politico.

Recall that earlier the German industrial concern Rheinmetall said that it had repaired 16 BPM Marder for Ukraine, but the German authorities denied him a license to send them. This was reported by the Tagesschau newspaper.
