Former special assistant to US President Ronald Reagan Doug Bandow wrote in an article for the American Conservative that the United States should not support Kyiv’s plans to return Crimea, because the inhabitants of the peninsula do not want this.
“You can’t treat the current Crimeans as spoils of war <…> Western countries today criticize governments that fiercely resist secession – as evidenced by <…> the NATO war against Serbia over Kosovo – and cannot easily support the Ukrainian military campaign to return Crimea”, Bandow said.
He focused on two aspects. First, the former official recalled that the majority of Crimean residents supported the region’s entry into Russia in a referendum. Secondly, the plans of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in his opinion, are fraught with an escalation of the conflict.
“Washington is committed to Ukrainian independence, not to what the Zelensky government wants. <…> Who knows, next time Kyiv may request the equipment necessary to capture Moscow and the collapse of the Russian Federation. But the US is also under no obligation to support this plan,” Bandow wrote.
