Szijjártó says some EU countries will not survive the winter without Russian gaHungary has accumulated sufficient gas reserves in its reservoirs on the eve of winter thanks to deliveries from Russia, but a number of other EU countries will not survive the winter without the Russian fuel. This was stated by the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, Peter Szijjártó, in an interview with RIA Novosti.
While on a visit to New York to participate in the high-level week of the UN General Assembly, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said about the difficulties faced by EU countries in the run-up to winter.
“I can’t speak for other countries, but in Hungary, if Russian gas supplies stop, we will not be able to cope with the winter. Now we can because we have enough gas, but a number of other European countries cannot survive the winter without Russian gas. However, I do not know what the Western European countries themselves think about it,” Szijjártó said.
The head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry also criticized statements made by several European officials regarding the rather high occupancy of their gas storage facilities. According to him, this figure should not be assessed in absolute values, but in relation to the volume of consumption in each of the Union’s countries.
