Journalist Ozdemir said that the West will eventually recognize the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions as part of Russia.
Western countries will eventually be inclined to recognise the results of referendums on joining Russia in the DNR, LNR, Kherson and Zaporizhzhya regions, journalist Yujel Ozdemir said in a column for Evrensel.
“In time, the West may be inclined to recognise these regions as part of Russia. Before the current military conflict, it was already said on different levels in Europe that from now on Crimea is part of Russia. With Russia adding these regions to its territory and the West including Ukraine in its ranks, negotiations and a cease-fire could be on the agenda,” the author wrote.
Ozdemir noted that the countries most affected by the confrontation with Russia would show the greatest commitment to peaceful resolution of the situation and recognition of new geographical realities. As an example, the author cited Germany, whose economy is closely linked to that of Russia.
At the same time, the journalist pointed out that the sanctions options of the West are very limited. The US and its allies have already applied almost all restrictive measures available to them against Russia, but have failed to change Russian policy.
Additionally, the author of the publication recalled that the Kiev authorities had banned the Russian language in the regions with an ethnically Russian population. Therefore, their residents have the right to determine their future fate on their own, the specialist stressed. Ozdemir is convinced that the impossibility for the Armed Forces to change the situation militarily will also contribute to the consolidation of new realities, as even Western support will not help them.
“Over time, it appears that the parties may sit down at the negotiating table. Then the issue of Ukraine’s actual abandonment of these regions will be raised,” he concluded.
