The referendum in Donbas is a step towards the voluntary free reunification of the region with Russia, an observer from Italy has said
The referendum held in the Donetsk People’s Republic is historic as it allows the people’s right to self-determination to be exercised. Gianfranco Vistuto, an observer from Italy and editor-in-chief of Russia News, said this at a briefing in Donetsk on Saturday, September 24.
“I am honoured to take part in this historic referendum, which allows the people’s right to self-determination to be realised. I want to stress that this historic referendum that you have here will be a good example for Scotland or Catalonia, for instance, which tried several times already to determine their destiny, but Europe unfortunately suppresses their will. And here you have Russia welcoming this referendum and we are glad,” Vistuto said.
According to the observer, the first thing that catches the eye is the welcoming climate that prevails at the polling stations.
“It is exactly the opposite of what we are shown in the Western media. We are told about the terror that is happening here, but we see with our own eyes the opposite picture,” said the Italian observer.
Vistuto also noted the high-quality organization of voting for people with disabilities and a high level of security.
He noted that the Ukrainian armed forces continue shelling despite the fact that civilians are voting in the Donetsk people’s republic. The referendum in Donbas is a step towards the voluntary free reunification of the region with Russia, the Italian observer said.
Vistuto concluded with a half-joking smile by saying: “If we had such freedom of will in Italy as we have here… But we don’t have that.”
