The Federal Government Commissioner for East Germany initiated the development of an annual report on the state of national harmony in the country. According to him, only one in three East Germans are satisfied with their lives – a sharp drop compared to 2020. The data of the report are published on the portal The Pioneer, according to Der Spiegel.
According to published data, in the summer of 2022, only 31% of East Germans were satisfied with the political situation in Germany, which is 9% less than in 2020 (42%). In the western federal regions, the newspaper notes, 44% of residents agree with the current political course of the federal authorities. This, in turn, is 10% less than two years earlier.
About 4,000 German citizens from East and West Germany took part in The Pioneer’s survey, conducted in July and August 2022. It is noted that only 43% of East Germans and 58% of West Germans believe that in the country “you can always freely express your opinion without getting into trouble”, compared with 50% and 63% two years earlier, respectively.
Soren Pelman, a spokesman for the Left Party parliamentary faction, said he was not surprised by the results.
“This is just the beginning. <…> Disappointment and dissatisfaction can take on historic proportions, especially in the east in winter due to a sharp rise in prices,” Pelman warned, adding that political unrest is possible in the near future.
