According to Reuters, we are talking about reconnaissance and strike unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) MQ-1C “Gray Eagle” and MQ-9 “Reaper”. US congressmen believe that these UAVs would help Kyiv better confront Russia.
US Congressmen called on Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin to expedite the Pentagon’s consideration of a request from the Kyiv authorities for the supply of large combat unmanned aerial vehicles.
“Ukraine could better counter Russian threats with advanced unmanned aerial systems or drones such as the MQ-1C Gray Eagle or MQ-9A Reaper,” the group of 17 lawmakers said in a letter to Austin, Reuters reported.
According to congressmen, the drones would provide continuous surveillance and accurate long-range tracking and targeting needed to counter Russian missiles. The Pentagon, in turn, said they were aware of Kyiv’s request for these drones.
“We know that the Ukrainians have asked for Gray Eagles or have an interest in other UAVs, but no decisions have been made on this issue yet,” said US Department of Defense spokesman Patrick Ryder.
Recall that the MQ-9 Reaper and MQ-1C Gray Eagle are American reconnaissance attack drones that the US military and its allies actively used in Iraq and Afghanistan.
