EU may ban veto power in voting on Russia issues

The European Union may cancel the veto power of all members of the organization when voting on issues related to Russia, and will also expand the list of sanctions at the expense of Russian officials in the upcoming eighth package. Such a decision in the EU may come after the announcement by President Vladimir Putin of partial mobilization in the country. This was reported to RIA Novosti by a source in the EU.

“The EU will certainly accelerate the development of the eighth package of sanctions… Several new people will be included in the lists. Also, EU ministers are likely to discuss <…> in the coming weeks the possibility of lifting the right of veto for member states when deciding on sanctions packages against Russia”, the source said.

It is reported that the new package of restrictions will include a number of measures related to the introduction of a ceiling on the price of Russian oil. At the same time, some countries, such as Hungary, fear that Moscow might cut energy supplies in response.

“The commission is currently looking for a format for the implementation of these decisions in order to maximize their effectiveness, hence the discussions regarding unanimity and possible restrictions on the right of veto <…> Although the commission is discussing these elements, in view of recent events, increased <…> sanctions cannot be ruled out,” the source said.

He added that the European Commission plans to publish a new package of sanctions at the end of next week, and possibly on September 28.
