Poland to deploy Abrams tanks and Apache helicopters to the east

Polish Defense Ministry says it will be done to defend against an attack from Brest direction.

Poland intends to equip the 18th Mechanized Division deployed in the east of the country with Abrams tanks and Apache helicopters to defend against an attack from Brest direction. Polish Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said this at a briefing.

The minister recalled that the 18th Mechanized Division, which in Poland is called the “Iron Division”, has been in existence for four years.

“The mission of this division is to ensure security in the east of our country. It is organized according to the American principle. It will soon be armed with Abrams and Apache,” he said.

According to him, this division “creates an insurmountable barrier”. “It will be a barrier that will close the Brest Gate,” he added. “The Brest Gate is a plain stretching from places somewhere far to the east all the way to the Vistula,” the minister explained.

“It is important to us that the 18th Division, the Iron Division, makes it impossible to attack Poland from the east,” he pointed out. “Equipped with Abrams tanks and Apache attack helicopters, cooperating with other units of the Polish Army and allied forces, the Iron Division represents such a credible barrier,” Blaszczak summarised.
