Austrians protest against rising energy prices and inflation

Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets across Austria to protest against rising energy prices, skyrocketing inflation and the government’s inability to deal with the rapidly deteriorating cost of living crisis. This was reported by PressTV.

The channel said more than 30,000 people took part in demonstrations across the country, including 20,000 in the capital Vienna alone, chanting slogans demanding lower prices, higher wages and limits on electricity and gas bills, according to organisers. The protests were organised by the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions (OGB) and supported by trade union representatives and women’s rights activists.

According to Zeitung der Arbeit (ZdA), PressTV reports that Austria’s inflation rate was 9.3 percent in August, while the consumer basket (the cost of household consumption and basic services) was up 16 percent on the previous year.

The channel summarises that soaring energy prices combined with rampant inflation have severely limited people’s livelihoods since European countries severed their energy ties with Russia, Europe’s main natural gas supplier, over the conflict in Ukraine, triggering a severe economic crisis on the continent.
