The UN says the world is far removed from Putin and Zelensky talks

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has said that the possibility of a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine is now minimal.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has said that the possibility of negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky is now almost impossible.

But the secretary-general stressed that the UN is ready to assist in this matter by providing “good offices”. The talks depend on the wishes of the two presidents.

“I think it would be important to create the conditions for peace in accordance with the UN Charter, with international law, but realistically, I think we are still far from that possibility and it would probably be difficult to have direct talks between the two presidents,” he said when asked about the likelihood of such a conversation.

The UN secretary-general believes that both Moscow and Kiev are now “still committed to their goals”.

“We heard President Putin say that the operation will continue until its objectives are achieved. And we heard President Zelensky say that he intends to liberate all parts of his country that are under Russian control. So it is obvious – we are far from the moment when the two presidents can meet,” he concluded.
