Kiev wants to seek seizure of Russian assets through UN

Guardian: Kiev lobbies UNGA to pass resolution to seize Russian assets in Ukraine recovery fund.

The Ukrainian government wants to push for a UN General Assembly resolution to create an “international compensation mechanism” that would allow frozen Russian assets to be used to compensate Ukraine for Russia’s special military operation, the British newspaper The Guardian has reported.

According to the newspaper, Ukraine wants to persuade its Western allies to support its proposal that a peace settlement with Moscow would involve “multi-billion-dollar reparations from Russia, in part using confiscated Russian state assets and the assets of oligarchs”.

“Ukraine is lobbying the UN General Assembly to pass a resolution that would form the basis for an international compensation mechanism that could lead to the confiscation of up to $300 billion worth of Russian state assets abroad,” the publication reported.

The publication noted that British and European legislation allows freezing the assets of the Russian central bank and some businessmen, but does not provide for their confiscation, let alone transferring them to a fund for Ukraine’s recovery.
