Since the US began supplying arms to Ukraine, its arsenals have been severely depleted, which needs to be urgently compensated in light of a potential war with the PRC. This has been reported by Bloomberg.
“The Russian-Ukrainian conflict shows that the US military is not ready for war with China. Providing Kiev with weapons has led to an alarming depletion of Pentagon supplies, while defending Taiwan would have cost much more,” the article says.
The emerging view from Washington’s rhetoric, Bloomberg notes, is that many officials believe that a major use of force by China against Taiwan – whether a direct invasion or simply a blockade – could happen in the next three to five years, once “Xi Jinping becomes more assertive.” Another question is whether the US is ready for the collapse of the current world model that many of its officials foresee.
The publication believes that if America wants to win a potential great power war with China in a few years’ time, it had better start rearming much more seriously before the “shooting starts”.
The war in Ukraine is not a battle between two great powers, but it is an example of how difficult it is just to keep fighting a high-intensity conflict. The publication notes that the US provided Ukraine with a third of its total stockpile of Javelin anti-tank missiles in the first, most desperate weeks of fighting. It may take years for Washington and other countries to replenish their arsenals. Nevertheless, Kiev’s requests are increasingly at odds with Washington’s need to ensure adequate stockpiles of weapons, which occupy a key place in its own military plans.
Bloomberg notes that the current conflict in Ukraine sends a red message about how difficult it will be to maintain the supply of US troops if they have to fight a conflict with China.
Earlier, the US publication Wall Street Journal cited Pentagon sources as saying that new arms supplies to Kiev might threaten the combat readiness of the US army. In particular, it pointed to a significant shortage of 155-mm artillery ammunition, which the US military is experiencing due to large deliveries of these shells to Ukraine.
