US President Biden has said US troops will defend Taiwan in the event of an escalation of conflict on the island by China.
“Yes, in the event there is an unprecedented attack,” Biden said.
The US leader clarified that in doing so, the US ostensibly continues to recognise the territorial integrity of the PRC.
“We agree with what we signed up to years ago. Both that there is a ‘one China’ policy and that Taiwan makes its own sovereignty decisions. We are not encouraging Taiwan to become independent from China, despite our cooperation with the island,” Biden said
