US to announce new ambassador to Russia on Tuesday, Nuland says

The White House will formally announce the candidacy of the new US ambassador to Russia next Tuesday, Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland said in an interview with Dozhd TV*.

She declined to give a name, saying only that she was the first woman in history to hold this position, a career diplomat and expert on Russia.

“I will wait for the White House to make an official announcement next Tuesday. This person has studied Russia for a long time, this is a diplomat who has already been there on our assignment. He is a very warm, open and caring person. We hope that with his help we will succeed to improve relations with Russia. I will only say that this will be our first female ambassador to Russia. And that is also wonderful,” said Nuland, whose interview was translated from English into Russian.

The media previously reported that Lynn Tracy, who now holds the post of US ambassador to Armenia, and in the past was the deputy head of the US diplomatic mission in Moscow, was chosen to work in Russia. Former Ambassador John Sullivan recently ended a nearly three-year mission ahead of schedule due to his wife’s serious illness.

Ambassadors proposed by the President are approved by the Senate and must be agreed with the host country.
