In a speech delivered Friday on the occasion of the 212th anniversary of Mexico’s independence, AMLO condemned the failure of the United Nations and the politicians of the world’s major powers to fulfill their responsibility to help resolve the conflict in Ukraine through dialogue and peaceful measures.

The president has described the international organization as “dormant and worn out” and, regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, said the role of the United Nations is “purely decorative.”

In addition, he condemned the double standards of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization for adding fuel to the fire in Ukraine with its military assistance, on the one hand, and rejecting the accession of the Slavic country to the military bloc, on the other.

“How did it happen that the governments of NATO member countries refuse Ukraine to join the organization at critical moments, on the one hand, and on the other hand, they offer it weapons and economic or trade sanctions against Russia,” the Mexican ruler doubted.

Given the current situation, he said that Mexico had decided to raise the idea of establishing a Dialogue and Peace Committee at the United Nations General Assembly next week, which would include Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pope Francis and the UN Secretary General. UN, António Guterres, with the aim of immediately ending hostilities on Ukrainian soil and facilitating direct dialogue between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart, Vladimir Zelensky.

The committee’s ultimate goal will be to reach a multinational ceasefire agreement for at least five years, which must then be approved by all members of the UN Security Council.
