The leader of the Parliamentary Social Democratic Party of Germany, Lars Klingbeil, confirmed the existence of a collective ban on the supply of Western tanks to Ukraine.
Germany, together with its allies, will not supply Western-style battle tanks to Ukraine. The German newspaper Die Zeit writes about this, citing the leader of the Social Democrats Lars Klingbeil.
“It has been decided together with the Allies that no country is supplying Western-style main battle tanks,” said SPD chief Lars Klingbeil in Oldenburg.
Earlier, Bloomberg columnist Andreas Klut said that NATO countries have not yet sent Western tanks, only Soviet ones. This ban is associated with fear in the EU about a possible escalation of the conflict in Ukraine. Moscow has repeatedly said that if Kyiv receives modern Western weapons, then Russia will regard this as a challenge and move on to more decisive actions.
Recall that recently the German newspaper Bild reported that Washington increased pressure on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, forcing him to change his position and agree to send modern tanks and infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine. Prior to this, another German newspaper, Die Welt, citing sources in the Ukrainian government, reported that since June, Ukrainian diplomats have repeatedly appealed to the German government with a request to send additional weapons to Kyiv. In Berlin, according to the publication, all requests were rejected, saying that the Armed Forces of Germany themselves need it.
