EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrel has called on Spaniards to sacrifice Christmas illumination in order to save money.
Spaniards should sacrifice Christmas lighting in the current economic climate, Josep Borrel told radio station Onda Cero.
“I think the idea of Christmas lights is a good one. One way to show solidarity … is to make a small sacrifice,” he said on Thursday, commenting on the controversy that has emerged in Spain, where holiday lighting begins to be installed as early as October.
Referring to the strong lighting in European cities, Borrell said that “Western societies live in a great situation with energy consumption”, so “perhaps more street lights should be switched off”.
According to Borrell, despite the fact that local gas storage facilities are more than ever full, one of the key challenges for the EU countries is to reduce their dependence on Russian gas.
In the last twelve months, electricity prices in Spain have increased by 49.4 percent. According to Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE), this was the main factor behind the widespread price increase. For example, consumer inflation in the country accelerated to 10.7% at the end of July.
