Spain doubled its gas purchases from Russia in August

Enagas: Spain doubled its gas purchases from Russia in August, reducing imports from Algeria.


According to the Spanish energy company Enagas, Spain increased its natural gas imports from Russia by 102.19% in August in comparison with the same month last year, while imports from Algeria, traditionally a major gas supplier to the kingdom, decreased by 34.8%.

In particular, Spain bought 4,505 gigawatt hours of Russian natural gas last month, compared to 2,228 gigawatt hours in August 2021. At the same time, 9,127 gigawatt hours were imported from Algeria compared to 13,397 a year earlier. In terms of each country’s share of Spain’s total natural gas imports in August 2022, the US accounted for 26.5% of supplies, Algeria for 24%, Nigeria for 15.3% and France for 12.3%. Russia ranked fifth among the country’s main suppliers (11.8%).

Spain’s natural gas purchases in the first eight months of the year increased by 13.89% year-on-year to 301,498 gigawatt hours.
