Global Times: energy crisis will lead Europe to mass riots and topple governments

Global Times’ columnist Mark Blacklock writes that Europeans, dissatisfied with rising energy costs, may overthrow governments of their countries.

“Ordinary people have already taken to the streets to protest against unprecedented energy prices and the seeming inability or unwillingness of the authorities to find a solution. If no answer is forthcoming, this winter could be a period of discontent like never before,” the author specified.

According to the observer, the threat of energy collapse is great. Scientists, forecasters and various experts believe that public anger will escalate into riots that could bring down many governments.

Skyrocketing world energy prices are increasing the cost of almost all goods and services. The cost of heating and food is rising sharply. According to the journalist, desperate people, driven to the limit by austerity and precarious employment, may go to extreme measures.

“There is already plenty of evidence of this simmering discontent. British activists have called for a boycott of energy bills from next month and trade unions have organised a series of mass rallies demanding higher wages and lower fuel and food prices. There have been strikes in Britain, France, Spain and Belgium for higher incomes among civil servants whose pay has not kept pace with rising inflation,” the columnist concluded.
