Russian President Vladimir Putin said that statements that Russia violates international law are untrue
Vladimir Putin did not agree that Russia violated the principles of international law. The Russian leader said international law is always being flouted, the war in Iraq, the actions in Yugoslavia and the bombing of Belgrade were not accompanied by UN sanctions, but today they blame Moscow.
“International law is always being trampled upon. Now a lot of people are saying that Russia is violating international law. I believe this is totally untrue. Who started the war in Iraq without any UN sanction? Who destroyed Yugoslavia on plausible pretexts, who did that? Who started a war in the centre of Europe by bombing Belgrade? No one remembered the principles of international law then,” Putin said during a plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum.
The Russian president believes that those who take such actions are themselves aware that they are violating the principles of international law, but impose “far-fetched rules” on others.
“This is why they talk about some far-fetched rules. What rules and what have they invented? Where did they get these rules from? Let them live by them themselves,” concluded the Russian president.
