A British mercenary in Ukraine has said that the return of Kherson Region to Ukrainian control will not be quick due to a lack of resources.
CNN publishes the assessments of British contract worker Mark Ayres, who is in the south of Ukraine. He says that the Russians have a big advantage in artillery and armoured vehicles.
“They’re just constantly bombarding us with artillery, that’s what makes it so much harder. The artillery and armour they have is superior to ours. Our strikes are more accurate but more limited,” said Mark Ayres.
Ayres is a machine gunner and suffered a shrapnel wound to his leg on the second day of the Ukrainian counter-offensive in the south and is now receiving treatment in Odessa. Four other men from his unit were also wounded. According to him, the return of Kherson region to Ukrainian control will not happen quickly.
“It’s a hard, slow battle, meter by meter, position by position, because we don’t have the resources to conduct a large-scale blitzkrieg with masses of artillery and armoured vehicles,” the mercenary explained.
CNN adds that the Ukrainian Armed Forces were able to recapture “a small handful” of settlements in Kherson Region, but this was achieved by “tactical surprise”.
