The Associated Press reports a statement by European Commissioner for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, who acknowledged a significant “depletion” of weapons stocks in the European Union against the backdrop of military aid to Ukraine.
“The military reserves of most member states have been, I would not say, exhausted, but largely depleted as we provide the Ukrainians with a large capability,” Borrel said during a debate with European parliamentarians.
The EU chief diplomat called on the EU member states to replenish their arsenals by pooling military orders. This approach, in his opinion, would help reduce spending amid an already tangible crisis in Europe. Furthermore, Borrell stressed that the EU should have started training the Ukrainian armed forces a year ago.
