Public opinion in Austria and the country’s government are increasingly inclined to lift sanctions against Russia. This is reported by the German newspaper Die Welt.
Referring to current public opinion polls, the publication states that at the moment, 40% of Austrians are in favor of lifting anti-Russian sanctions. The reason for the change in the mood of citizens is the rise in energy prices and high inflation.
“There is no longer a clear pro-sanctions majority in Austria,” concludes Die Welt.
According to the publication, support for the Austrian Freedom Party, which advocates “a respectful dialogue with Russia,” is growing rapidly in the country. At the same time, increasingly, under pressure from society, politicians from the ruling coalition are beginning to abandon anti-Russian rhetoric, writes Die Welt.
