EU names possible date of abolition of simplified visa regime with Russia

The European Union may approve the termination of visa facilitation regime with Russia on 7 September.

On September 7 at the meeting of the COREPER (Committee of Permanent Representatives to the European Union) delegates from European Union countries may agree on the complete suspension of the agreement on simplified visa regime with Russia. This is stated in the announced agenda of the meeting, the text of which is quoted by RIA Novosti.

“EU Council decision to suspend application of visa facilitation agreement with Russia. Approval,” the document reads. The item is marked “possible”.

Earlier, the European Commission reminded the RIA Novosti news agency that EU member states are free to restrict issuing visas to Russian citizens on their own, but there will always remain categories of people who should be issued visas – for example, in humanitarian cases, for family members staying in the EU, and for journalists.
