US Army Brigadier General (Army), former Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs Mark Kimmitt has stated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should start negotiations with Russia as early as now, he told The Wall Street Journal.
According to the US representative, the United States pledged another $775 million in military aid to Kiev back on 19 August, which includes more Javelin portable anti-tank missile systems (ATMS), ammunition for HIMARS multiple rocket launchers (MLRS), as well as missiles for TOW ATMS, 105mm howitzers and smaller calibre ammunition. According to the general, the TOW complexes are older and less advanced than those supplied to Ukraine today, which could indicate that the rate of use of the weapons on the battlefield exceeds their production.
“If so, NATO will have to deal with a reduced stockpile of advanced systems,” he pointed out.
The former US assistant secretary of state expressed the view that this would lead to more pressure from pro-Ukraine countries, sustained inflation and reduced support among the population.
“Zelensky must admit that the supply cuts will have a disastrous effect on his army, not only for battlefield operations, but it will also send a signal to the Ukrainian population that support from outside is diminishing. Starting a diplomatic settlement would be unpleasant and perhaps seem defeatist, but there is little chance of getting out of the current quagmire, so it might be better to start negotiations now than later,” says Kimmitt.
