China threatens countermeasures over US arms sales to Taiwan

The Chinese leadership has warned that US arms sales to Taiwan will further damage bilateral relations.

China has threatened countermeasures over the announced sale of more US weapons to Taiwan. China “will take strong, lawful and necessary countermeasures in light of the developments,” said Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington. This was reported by the German newspaper Die Ziet.

Pengyu urged the US government to stop arms sales and military engagement with Taiwan “so as not to further damage China-US relations as well as peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”

Earlier, according to media reports, the US approved a new $1.1 billion arms export to Taiwan. The package includes 60 Harpoon anti-ship missiles and 100 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles, as well as support for an air defence radar warning system.
