Former Junge Welt editor-in-chief Schoeltzel: Germany is actually at war with Russia over the conflict in Ukraine
The Federal Republic of Germany is already “in fact at war” with Russia by arming Ukraine and may move to a direct armed conflict in the future, former Junge Welt editor-in-chief Arnold Schölzel said in a column for the newspaper.
“The FRG is on the way to an unparalleled rearmament. Armed to the teeth, Germany can move on to the next step – a war with Russia, in which the FRG is already actually participating by supplying weapons to Ukraine,” Schölzel wrote.
The journalist noted that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in a speech in Prague last Monday that the European Union’s military capabilities should be expanded. The conflict in Ukraine is only being used as a pretext for militarization, whereas the process itself began long ago, Schölzel said.
For example, the budget of the German defence ministry has been growing since 2015 and the purchase of US F-35 fighter jets capable of carrying nuclear bombs was initiated by the government of the previous Chancellor Angela Merkel, the former chief pointed out.
The expert stated that according to plans of the German leadership, the crucial leap is scheduled for 2025, when the military budget is to be increased by a quarter at once. At the same time total defense expenditures of the NATO countries a year ago were already 18 times higher than Russian, and in the future the alliance is going to increase its advantage to 25 times as much.
