Saxon Prime Minister Kretschmer has demanded that the German economy be saved with Russian gas.
The German economy needs Russian gas, a shortage of which has led to higher prices for both energy and basic raw materials, Saxon Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer told Die Welt newspaper
According to Krechmer, Germany could face greater economic consequences because of the current policy of anti-Russian sanctions than it did after the 2008 crisis.
“We are suffering from rising energy prices and all essential products, from flour and paper to aluminium. <…> No one realises that we are buying shale gas in the US but not developing our own fields. And finally, Russian gas. Of course we need it! The end of the conflict must give us the chance to return to gas trading with Russia,” said the Saxon Prime Minister.
The politician noted that local nitrogen production plants have been forced to shut down due to soaring fuel and electricity prices.
“Take a look at the market prices on the Leipzig energy exchange. The current price is 800 euros, and we are starting from 40 euros per megawatt hour! It is simply not true when the Greens say that the problem is the price of gas, not electricity. Both prices are a huge problem. <…> The federal government must wake up and finally act. This is what the chambers of commerce and trade associations are demanding,” he said
