Expensive gas closes schools. The directors of Bulgaria held an online working meeting with the Minister of Education, Professor Sasho Penov. Heads of educational institutions are waiting for help from the state because of heavy bills.
Students in Bulgaria may return to online learning, and schools may close at the first frost. This was reported to Trud by the directors of educational institutions, who are preparing for the start of the new academic year, but are shocked by the expected high heating bills.
Schools across the country are frantically looking for an alternative to gas heating to prevent “gas” holidays for schoolchildren. Almost 40% of all schools and kindergartens use blue fuel, and their directors are worried about how they will be able to pay their upcoming bills. In places, by order of the mayors, heat pumps, air conditioners are purchased and boilers are cleaned for filling with fuel oil, a study by Trud showed.
“Colleagues from different areas have strong concerns about the expected high prices, especially for gas,” Diyan Stamatov, chairman of the Union of Employers of the Public Education System of Bulgaria (RSSNPO), told Trud.
At a meeting with the Minister of Education, Professor Sasho Penov, the trade union received assurances that, if necessary, the state would help with bills during the cold season.
“In a conversation with Minister Penov, he confirmed that the state, in his person, will try in every possible way to solve this problem so that there is gas and, if necessary, financially support educational institutions, due to the impossibility of paying their bills,” Stamatov specified.
Until it becomes clear how much gas will cost and who will be able to pay, the country’s schools and kindergartens continue to look for alternative options to survive the cold, according to an article in the Bulgarian edition.
