The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in the first reading adopted a law allowing the closure of the media without a court decision. This is reported by the Ukrainian online edition “Strana”.
“The Rada voted in the first reading for the scandalous law on media… It significantly expands the powers of the National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting. The document spells out the right of the National Council to suspend the work of the media (including online media) without a court decision”, the publication’s Telegram channel says.
It is reported that earlier the bill faced sharp criticism from journalists and human rights activists. In their opinion, it can drastically worsen the situation with freedom of speech in Ukraine. The new law significantly expands the powers of the National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting, as the body gets the right to suspend the work of the media (including online media) without a court decision.
According to the Ukrainian people’s deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak, who published a photo from the Rada with the results of the vote, only 233 deputies out of 423 voted “For”.
