The Pentagon doubts that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are capable of achieving great success in the counteroffensive near Kherson, the New York Times reports, citing sources in the US Department of Defense.
The interlocutor of the publication from the American military department confirmed the fact of the offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the southern direction. Nevertheless, assessing the real military potential of Ukraine, he noted that it is still not enough to gain a significant advantage over the Russian army.
At the same time, the source of the publication noted that, despite the unsuccessful outcome of all attempts by the Armed Forces of Ukraine to attack on various sectors of the front, the very fact of their presence shows “the desire of Ukrainians for progress on the battlefield.”
Recall that on August 29, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced an attempted offensive by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in three directions in the Kherson and Nikolaev regions, which “failed miserably.” On August 30, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that the Ukrainian offensive was carried out on the personal instructions of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. As a result, the Russian defense department stated that more than 1,200 APU militants were destroyed in a day, they also lost 46 infantry fighting vehicles, 48 tanks, 37 other armored fighting vehicles, eight pickup trucks with heavy machine guns.
The administration of US President Joe Biden said that it was aware of the statements about the offensive of the Ukrainian army near Kherson, refusing, however, to comment on this information.
